With Cyclescheme, everyone's a winner

Your staff are the backbone of your business and ultimately, the happier they are, the happier you will be in the long run. And nothing gets those happy endorphins flowing like exercise. That’s where Cyclescheme comes in.
Cyclescheme by BHN Extras was introduced in 2023 as a benefit offered by employers to get their employees cycling to work in a bid to improve their mental and financial wellbeing. The scheme already boasts over one million cyclists across the UK and is now recognised as the largest cycle to work provider in the country.
If you’re considering a bike to work scheme here’s how Cyclescheme could benefit both you and your employees.
Cost efficiency
Employees can save up to 47% on a new bike and/or accessories for work as they don’t pay income tax or national insurance on the RRP. The cost of their new riding equipment is deducted from their salary and is taken in instalments spread across a period chosen by you.
Do you have any team members interested in a cycling to work scheme? If so, why not ask them to fill in our savings calculator here. It takes just seconds to complete and will give them an instant answer regarding how much will be deducted from their salary each month (as well as their overall saving compared to purchasing a bike externally).
Benefits for your business
You’ll save up to 15% in National Insurance Contributions (NIC’s) for every employee who uses Cyclescheme. This means you will save on average £150 for every £1000 your team processes via the scheme. Most importantly, Cyclescheme doesn’t cost you anything to sign up, or to run as we even handle the end of hire costs! All you have to do is approve your employee applications.

Improving Health
For those that bike to work the health benefits are endless. Cycling is a full body workout that improves not only physical fitness, but mental wellbeing also.
Physical Benefits
Cycling is a low impact aerobic exercise that strengthens a number of muscles without putting too much stress on joints, making it suitable for all ages and abilities. It improves cardiovascular health, lowers cholesterol, supports healthy blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes (find out more here).
Moderate daily cycling also burns up to 300 calories per hour, increases metabolism, and enhances stamina. See how many calories your employees could burn each day by cycling to work with our health calculator here.
Mental Benefits
Those who bike to work can also look forward to an improvement in their mental wellbeing as exercise releases endorphins (happy hormones) which reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Exercising regularly can also improve energy levels and lead to a sense of rejuvenation.
Benefits for your business
Cyclists who commute 61km (38miles) per week have an 8-12% lower risk of taking sick days. It’s also commonly known that those who stay fit are generally less at risk of common conditions that can lead to needing time off work.
Improved punctuality

In some parts of the UK it is actually quicker to cycle to work than drive or use public transport. Plus, cyclists are generally less stressed when they arrive at work and therefore, arrive ready to go. This punctuality means there’s more balance and calmness amongst the workforce, not to mention daily workflows running smoother and more tasks being completed on time, thus leading to improved productivity. This can lead to an overall reduction in stress levels for employees and managers alike.
Kind to the environment

Every member of staff who cycles to work reduces their own carbon footprint and that of your company. Research conducted by the European Cyclist’s Federation (ECF) found that a bicycle and rider produce just 21g of CO2 per kilometre, whilst a car produces 271g per kilometre, which is more than ten times as much.
Other ways in which cycling benefits the planet include improved air quality (cycling produces zero emissions), decreased noise pollution (bicycles are a quiet mode of transport), and fuel savings.

Inclusivity

Cyclescheme is for everyone! It’s important that each member of your team has access to the right riding equipment to cycle to work, including those with disabilities, injuries and health issues. It is for that reason we work with over 2600 retailers across the UK, offering 500+ bicycle brands, so that every one of your employees has access to a bike that suits their needs.
Included in our scheme are battery powered and e-bikes, pedal assist options, hybrid, folding, mountain and road bikes. There are also tailored options for confident inclusive cycling such as non-standard and adapted models and specialist bikes for those with dwarfism.
Perhaps a member of your team doesn’t require their own bike – they may have nowhere to safely store it for example – and therefore a rented bike may be more appropriate. Those who wish to rent a bike via Cyclescheme can enjoy saving up to 47% on their commuting costs, all whilst using the brands they already know and trust.
Everything your employees need to get started

If your employees don’t already own a bike there’s a strong likelihood they also don’t have a helmet, bike bottle, bike lock etc. Not to worry, as well as providing your team members with the right bicycle to suit their needs, Cyclescheme also enables them to add accessories and equipment to their salary sacrifice scheme. That way they can enjoy biking to work with peace of mind that they have everything they need to do so safely and securely.
Available to all businesses and organisations
We truly believe that by enabling anyone who wishes to cycle the ability to do so, no matter their income or personal circumstances, we can make a real difference. It’s for that reason we work with businesses, organisations and corporations of all sizes, whether you have 2 employees or 2,000.
‘My message for anyone thinking about Cyclescheme would be to sign up now - the health and wellbeing benefits are huge. Every week I talk to staff who have participated in the scheme and it’s clear that it has had a really positive impact on the lives of many who work here.’ Mark Craske, Travel Manager at NHS Forth Valley

How does the Cyclescheme work for employers? +
